Despite her remorse, she was deemed to have acted in a manner unbecoming of an officer, by lying to protect herself and thus condemning me. She was reported for ‘alleged unnatural conduct’ and ‘alleged attempting to pervert the course of justice’.

I only discovered this and much more when my data protection request, ten years after I was discharged, led to a delivery of a massive file of records not only of my statements, but those of everyone else who had been caught up in the investigation and its far-reaching fallout. I was staggered to receive this information and to discover some of the hateful things that had been said and written about me. Yet, amongst the pain of reliving such awful times, there were beautiful nuggets of love, support and protection too. It was certainly an eye-opening, yet ultimately heartbreaking, testament to the humanity we share, despite our differences and travails.

Although I was terribly sad about what had happened to her, Mel’s action in coming clean really was vitally important to me, saving me from a much more damning and potentially life-threatening outcome. I truly believe there would have been a distinct possibility of my committing suicide if I had faced trial and been found guilty of such a disgusting offence.
